List of Writing and Analysis p.23

List:

  • Typing In-game
  • Blog posts
  • Filling out Forms
  • Texting
  • Emails
  • Skyping
  • Searching in Google
The three divergent genres I've listed above are, typing in-game, emails and blog posts because of the range of formality between these three. First in-game was usually, me to a friend, the genre for this is, similar to texting, generally the grammar I'd use is the same. the tone is usually casual. My audience for this was usually casual. Usually the purpose was to trade information among people, inform or ask.
My second was emails, I believe these to be in between my first and last picks in terms of formality. Emails are usually sent to a range of people, for me they'd be sent to teachers or my parents thus implying they'd be more formal then typing to another person in-game. The tone is usually more casual than a formal paper but less casual than texting or typing in-game. The purpose is usually to ask for help or ask for something, or it's to inform others of events.
My third genre was blog posts because for me, they are the most formal out of all the writing I've done in the past week. Blog posts are received by a large audience (usually) and because of that, depending on the person they can be informal or formal. The tone, for me at least is formal as shown by my choice of words. The purpose of the blog posts I've written is for school, usually to respond to a prompt, such as this one.
Thus each genre we choose to write for and the tone we use can drastically change the message we get across to others.

Is Everyone an Author?

Is everyone an author? To truly understand this question let us argue from both sides. The book argues that everyone is an author, because everyone has a story to write, it's just up to them whether to write it or not. then you can argue that a tale told through oral storytelling or the small stories written on Youtube, Twitter, or Facebook can still make someone an author. With the rise of blogging writing has become even more integrated into society with many people reading blogs daily, sharing opinions and stating facts, they've nearly become the new newspapers. To me an author is someone who writes a story and can write it well, which, for me, means that not everyone could be an author. I believe that a story which is well written, grabs the readers attention and possibly reveals truths about our society is what drives a story to an "Author" level, and not everyone can do that. Thus my conclusion is that everyone can be a storyteller in their own way but to truly be an author you have to push storytelling to new heights. Thank you for reading.

What is writing? Writing is recorded communication that most languages use, some languages such as ASL don’t use writing, to convey a message. Our group uses writing mainly for notes while few of us use it for poetry, short stories or attempting to write research notes or actual novels. Our entire group agreed to usually forgoing grammar while writing for fun. We usually only write formally while writing to teachers or writing formal papers.
Our writing style changes depending on who is talking and who is listening, for example while talking to friends we use a more informal style, changing our word choice to shrinking down words/ sentences and using a lot of implied statements. Writing to teachers or bosses though generally calls upon a change in word choice to expanding words like I’m to I am or you're to you are.
